The Star Chamber is a very revealing look at celebrity trials. It elucidates in a fun-to-read format, how and why the justice system in the United States is different for celebrities versus common people.Dubin does not hold back his opinions and experiences in the high profile celebrity trials of our time. He gives a very thoughful analysis of how the celebrity cases were won and speaks candidly of the high-profile attorneys who participated in them.

We need to see this in writing...that the rich and famous are treated much better

Although the quality of the writing admittedly leaves something to be desired (as pointed out by others who panned this book), "The Star Chamber" offers a very valuable antidote to the media circus and its effect on the outcome of celebrity trials. Filled with interesting details, information effectively "suppressed" by the actions of the media and various accused, and even some rather salacious bits of trivia, this book completely changed my own previously rather sympathetic opinion towards one of the individuals featured in its pages. It changed my opinion, because the author made it quite clear how the spoiled brats of American society -- by virtue of their mere famousness -- can easily and unfairly turn the tables of criminal proceedings in their favor by "abusing the First Amendment and taking the Fifth". The book held my interest, I learned something I didn't know, and it was a quick and easy read. I recommend it for anyone with an interest in law, society, and celebrity.

In my ever so humble opinion, this was a light, meaningless read. Although that read didn't take much time, I'd classify it as a waste of the little time it did take. Very much like taking one tired old joke and making a movie out of it, Mr. Dubin has taken the one line cliché that celebrities enjoy a different level of justice in our system and rambled on about it to book length. In a word - dull. (Guess I did miss at least one word in my review's title)I don't believe the premise. I don't believe my fellow periodic jury pool members are that shallow. I don't believe anyone who does should be allowed to participate as an Officer of the very courts he or she so incorrectly distrusts. Don't get me wrong. It's not my disagreement with the premise that makes this a poor read. I've read some marvelous texts that make me want to scream at the author for having an opinion that is so very much against my personal beliefs. This book's inferiority stands on its own.

Dubin was the plaintiff's lawyer in a civil suit against Robert Blake in the death of his wife Bonny Bakely. Dubin analyzes the situation with celebrity trials in the US. He writes from his own insider perspective to expose the double standard that often prevails. In balance, he tells in exciting detail his own experience in his own spectacular win against Blake, who had already been found not guilty in criminal court. He analyzes the cases of O J Simpson and Michael Jackson, among other less spectacular cases. Dubin's razor-sharp analysis and precision reasoning power combine with a quiet but sometimes uproarious wit and sweeping writing style. This is insightful, funny, challenging and alarming.

I found the book to be a fascinating and insightful read, combined with some great laugh-out-loud moments. I had to go back and reread the "crack smoking monkeys" (yes you read that right) a second time because I laughed so hard the first time. The Halloween story was both funny and alarming at the same time. The book is a somewhat behind the scenes look at the celebrity trials and unique "justice" which is applied to them in the criminal and civil legal system. Some of this just made me laugh, and some made me angry.Through it all Eric Dubin provided unique insights into the lawyer's mind and lifted the veil on what's really happening in the courtroom and between the lawyers and their clients.I think the insights on multiple levels would make this a must read for anyone involved in or considering a career in trial law. For those of us who will hopefully never set foot in a courtroom in any capacity, it was likewise well worth reading.

This book includes it all. OJ, Blake, Jackson, Spector, Britney, Paris, Lohan, you name it. I think Dubin is the one who would know what happened seeing he was there. Dubin was the one who won the 30-million-dollar jury verdict against Blake on behalf of the Bakely family and the stories he has to tell are shocking. It makes you wonder what went on behind the scenes at all the other major celebrity trials and what is happening now with the O.J. hearing coming up.

I was interested in this book because it addresses the issue of our out-of-date court system when trying celebrity defendants--and it all starts with jury selection. The author, Eric Dubin, points out the near impossibility of finding unbiased jurors in the trials of celebrities most jurors have grown up watching/listening to. Even Dubin was star-struck by Robert Blake--and he was supposed to be proving Blake guilty of murder! This book claims that many trials are argued outside of the courtroom, with many defense lawyers employing "victim-bashing" tactics and other unsavory, unethical practices. Dubin introduces a term, "celebrity blueprint," which describes the formula high-powered defense attorneys use to get their famous clients out of jail free (so to speak). Many of the chapters feature illustrations, which had me laughing out loud because, sadly, though they're ridiculous, they're dead-on. Dubin's tongue-in-cheek style may not suit everyone, but I think the content is a must-read for those who a.) want to know the lengths to which people will go for fame; b.) want to know how Michael Jackson walked away from multiple counts of child molestation scot-free; and c.) want to know why Scott Peterson ended up convicted after following "the celebrity blueprint." There are many other reasons I enjoyed it, but I've already written far too much!
