Reading Lucinda Miller’s debut memoir is a lot like going for a walk in a Mennonite meadow, cows mooing in the distance, family flocking around the ripening apples on family trees. But it is more: It pushes forward like a coming of age novel: childhood, adolescence, young adulthood. It also plumbs deep, the writer fathoming her faith and her place in a larger, neon-lit world, which beckons.Sensitive and aiming to be scholarly, the author admits to being Dorky, Schoolbook Snorky, at odds with feeling both set apart and wanting to fit in. A former Mennonite myself, I could easily identify with wearing a prayer cap, taking vows of faith, and accepting the Holy Kiss of a whiskery woman after the foot-washing ritual.Luci, the storyteller, evidently took her creative writing classes to heart as she brings to life two Turtle Bishops, one whose wife Sandra “had a face as round and wrinkled as a warm oatmeal cookie fresh from the oven and fallen in on itself.” As truth-seeker, she opens up windows in other people minds to discover her own, I think, exploring the lives of the elderly but chipper Charlene and the sophisticated and muddled Mara. “Peel off the layers of my caped dress and opaque cap, and we all have the same strivings and struggles with believing," Luci Miller seems to say.Lucinda Miller’s little/big-girl voice sounds authentic, without guile. I imagine this could be Book 1 in a series of her own collection of plainspoken stories, some wild and “off the grid.” True to her best self.

I just finished this book in the wee hours this morning. I thought it would be a lovely and charming read. A quaint read. After all, it was about a Mennonite girl’s life. How enchanting! Little did I know that this book packed a wallop that was going to hit me right in the head, and the heart. It is about her life and her struggles to find her place in it.What strikes me so much about it is her willingness to bare all; her doubt, her pride, her insecurities, her dreams, her failures. And she delivers all of it with amazing insight and skill. Did I say skill? No, skill is learned. Talent. This woman was born to write. Her use of a certain word in just the right place is at times genius.She develops an unusual friendship with a woman in her sixties who is a highly educated atheist. They don’t live close to each other so this friendship is nurtured through emails. Here’s an example:“‘If you had been my daughter you would have gone to the finest schools and been a non-believer. You would already be published somewhere. Who knows???’And I told her, ‘My parents gave me the one thing they judged most valuable in all the world-because it will last beyond the world-simple faith. They prayed and sweated and cried, and taught us kids this simple faith. And I am more thankful for that gift than anything else they could have given me.’But it was easy to write words on a computer screen and flick them to someone a thousand miles away.” The fact that she adds that last sentence! It’s just so honest.And this part, that I wished I had read years ago to save me the trouble of struggling to figure this out for myself:“After a while, I realized it didn’t matter how educated she was or how firmly she believed in herself: loud didn’t make her right. It didn’t make her wrong, either. But for every time she shouted that the Bible was only myth, a thousand intelligent and educated people stood ready to defend it.Belief was an act of the will, I realized. Unbelief equally so. We all looked at the same evidence. And everyone-everyone-had a choice.”And the author’s honesty in talking about her family, especially her father. I won’t go into that here as I don’t want to give too much away, but suffice it to say, her father came from the darkest place a human mind can go and came out of it. Truly amazing. Hard to read the things he did. Fantastic book. Highly, highly recommended!

Anything but Simple - is truly one of those books you just don't want to end.Somehow I stumbled upon Lucinda's Blog about a year ago and really enjoyed her writing. I suppose what drew me in more than anything was the fact that she was a Mennonite. As someone whose spent the bulk of their life obsessed with the Amish/Plain People, following Lucinda was like a dream come true. When I read she'd published a book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I described the book like this to my husband "It's like Lucinda came to stay with us, and one day I went to tidy her room and noticed her journal left open on the end of her bed. Nosiness got the better of me and I took a quick peek". 'Anything but Simple' is a treasure. It looks into the mind and heart of a young woman surrounded by a loving strong Mennonite family, faith and tradition, yet still struggling with herself and her place in it all. I found myself reading this book and almost cringing at times because she holds nothing back even when the people she talks about are real and close to her. I doubt I would have had the courage to write so freely. But it's because of that, I felt I knew her and her beautiful family. I believe her glaring honesty and self revelation will speak to many as they too will see glimpses of their own struggles through her words. It's a book of full of personal discovery, choices and a quiet peace. Just beautiful.

Compulsively readable, ANYTHING BUT SIMPLE is an up-close-and-personal look at the faith-filled daily lives of a Mennonite family. And while simplicity and service to others are but two of the visible byproducts of their beliefs, it was refreshing to read that “Something spiritually meaningful needn’t be solemn and ominous. Fun and silly could do just as well.” Highly recommended, the pages of this book are filled with delicious soul-food for thought.

This honest and insightful account of Lucinda Miller and her family’s life offers a glimpse into their living out God’s calling daily. I enjoyed learning more of their history and reasoning—all that goes into practicing their faith as conservative Mennonites. I became a Mennonite as an adult so this was especially interesting to me. The author’s voice adds authenticity and draws the reader in. I read the book in one day. Her way with words blessed me. She tells the truth with no apology, for none is needed. I encourage all to read this to better understand those of us who choose this lifestyle, whether or not you agree.
