I have lived with pain from a devastating injury in 1998. I have had multiple surgeries and years of involvement in all types of pain management programs. I am also a nurse, no longer able to work, but as a nurse I have worked with many clients with chronic pain.First, there is some very good and helpful information and I can see how the worksheets could be helpful, especially in a group setting, to expedite conversation and understanding of the pain experience. It may be helpful in controlling pain in a person who lacks understanding of their own pain cycles.My problems with the book are;The writer assumes that what I do right now can be the trigger for pain following the action. The truth is that I may walk today and feel fine but the next day wake up with unbearable muscle spasms, pain does not necessarily follow the trigger.The book encourages reintegrating activities that I avoid into my life again. This would be foolish. Why would I want to participate in known problem activities and face the resultant pain just to have my life less compromised?I have learned to substitute activities with ways to keep myself occupied and avoid those that cause increased pain and even though my life has become very limited it has been the acceptance of the limitations that allow me peace of mind and less frustration than trying to force my body to a more "normal" life.Also, the website has been very slow and the results of the quizzes come up over the quiz, making it impossible to read.

Highly recommend for anyone with chronic pain. Lots of good ideas inside, no miracles, but many will take you a step or two in the right direction. Also very helpful for mental health professionals and other professional helpers. Most of us get a chronic pain patient now and then, Beginners often don't know how to help. This book will help you help your patient. I am already very experienced with pain patients, Nevertheless, when I have a chronic pain patient, I encourage my patient to get a copy, I refer to mine, we share some of the the excellent concepts and suggestions and work through them together. Patients always thank me.

I'm a psychotherapist working in a medical clinic. I work with many pain patients. Bought this book to help with setting up a group. I didn't end up using this book, his curriculum lasted weeks and weeks, we are doing a four week group. I was looking for straight-forward concise bullet points to follow, this was much too detailed for me, and I felt that a group using his format would just feel to the participants that the program was going on endlessly.

Very good book, easy to read and understand, very organized with charts to self check yourself, I am a health care professional so after loaning it from the library I had to buy it for my own library. So many clients have back pain and all are trying to find something to helpthis book is a start for them.
