I'm still reading the first of the five works, "Theosophy: An Introduction to the Supersensible Knowledge of the World and the Destination of Man". It's very interesting, but so complex that I don't think I could really understand it without making copious notes and diagrams. I've only ever heard good things about Steiner, so I'm assuming he's sincere in what he writes, in which case he's an amazing visionary. He describes a spiritual world with all kinds of levels, and auras, and various forces and beings. It's hard to keep it all straight. Honestly, right now I'm just trying to get through it. I'm getting the idea of the book even if I've sort of lost my way in the details.
Rudolf Steiner captures the essence of Christianity, then added his exposure to Indian Hindi with karma to describe a process to drive moral behavior, instead of blind reliance on religion. His most important contribution is to focus on the framework of religion in the context of living a moral life, recognizing specific instances of contributions to improve (as illustrated with his example of Augustine's focus on the original sin to help spread Christianity) and the spiritual realm that includes karma (or reincarnation from his exposure to eastern religions). In the last 100 years, religions like Christianity has taken off in a wrong dimension of infallibility, including both the Catholic doctrine of papal infallibility objected by theologians like Hans Kung, and Protestants have started to preach the perfect Bible which breed extremism. We just need to look at Pakistan and Islam to see how quickly extremism can develop if we fail to focus on the moral framework behind our religions or spiritual beliefs.
The greater part of the book is about theosophy. Steiner spends this time building a case for monism. I have read much better rationales. Steiner does discuss colors of auras (which is not a usual part of discussion of monism). Toward the end of the book when Steiner begins his discussion of higher worlds he begins a more direct discussion of anthroposophy. His writing then becomes less difficult and wordy and becomes more enlightening.
Steiner was a fascinating man with theosophical understanding. While I do not agree with many of his positions, I find it quite stimulating to read and challenge myself. I do not limit my reading to those with whom I agree, for that limits my growth. He has some points that are definitely worth considering.
good synopsis.
