Review
It was the genius of Carl Jung to discover in the "holy technique" of alchemy a parallel to the psychological individuation process. Alchemy: An Introduction To The Symbolism And The Psychology completely demystifies the subject. Designed as an introduction to Jung's more detailed studies, and profusely illustrated, Alchemy is a lucid and practical account of what the alchemists were really looking for -- emotional balance and wholeness. Marie-Louise von Franz has a gift for translating esoteric symbolic material into everyday experience. For the images and motifs that so occupied the alchemists were of an archetypal nature, and as such they constantly turn up in modern dreams and drawings. Alchemy is an important book, invaluable for an understanding of dreams and indispensable for anyone for anyone interested in relationships and communication between the sexes. Alchemy is an essential addition to the metaphysical reference shelf. --Midwest Book Review

I was given this book as a present while in college. I had no idea how it would change the way I perceive the world. I was taking a printmaking class and was exposed to very old working methods of printing. These processes in printmaking deal a lot with chemistry and I could only imagine these methods were stumbled upon and refined by alchemists. Alchemy to me stems from a time when human curiosity and thirst for knowledge was in complete union with human spirituality. As science evolved the need to be as objective as possible pushed spirituality out. There was no was to prove or disprove God. Before I read this "Alchemy" by von Franz and I was shown a book called "Alchemy and Mysticism" by Alexander Roob. You can see it on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Alchemy-Mysticism-Alexander-Roob/dp/3836549360 . This is a very great book and couples with this book in a magnificent way. Every page has pictures showing the evolution of alchemical thought along with some well written commentary. To me, is to study alchemy it's imagery. It's very rich and cryptic. Von Franz helped me translate this imagery. The subject of alchemy and it's psychology is the history of the human intellect.
I've read a few of Jung's works. I picked up Psychology and Alchemy and could not make much sense of it. This book illuminates the techniques of active imagination and concepts like individuation with surprising clarity and brilliance. In addition, her historical acumen is impressive. There are so many anecdotes in here that I look forward to reading it again.
I first discovered Marie-Louise Von Franz in her collaboration with Emma Jung in their extraordinary book "The Grail Legend", which is by far the most intellectually coherent book I have ever encountered regarding that material, in which they place those strange and surreal stories in the framework of a Jungian perspective on the history of consciousness. In these lectures on alchemical symbolism, Von Franz applies many of the same Jungian techniques to explore some important alchemical texts.I especially appreciated her decision to explore three texts in depth, rather than simply presenting a survey of alchemical literature, since there are numerous other books that do that. The fact that this is a transcript of a lecture series actually adds a wonderful dramatic tension to the book, since it includes some encounters with the attendees that demonstrate both her tremendous humanity and her impressive understanding of the subject and its relevance to modern psychology. One of the most provocative concepts presented is the danger of an individual experiencing an overload of revelation from the unconscious, with its accompanying challenge of integrating more insight than a mere mortal can manage. Von Franz explores this concept especially well in the discussion of the text by Thomas Aquinas, where we learn about his very stressful final years in a very moving lecture that continues to provide me with much to ponder.
Trying to make a study of Carl Jung and thought this would help. Not working for me! Might be because I realize I prefer anthropology analysis.
If you're reading Jung or have read Jung and are finding his ideas about Alchemy a little complex, then this is a perfect introductory text. As von Franz points out, Jung has done all the hard work for us. If so, then von Franz makes all of Jung's hard work even more accessible.
Alchemy is the hidden science of psychology and von Franz makes it perfectly understandable in this lovely series of lectures. I could not put it down - waiting to hear her interpretations of psychological process.
I am using this book in conjunction with a course, They Spoke Fire, taught by Laura Hope-Gill, Poet of the Blue Ridge, NC, at Lenoir Rhyne University Graduate Center in Asheville, NC. We are studying alchemy in terms of inner transformation. Excellent help from this book in understanding a plethora of symbols and their relationship to psychology.
ML von Franz deserves our attention whatever she writes. 'Alchemy' is thought-provoking and takes the reader into one of her seminars. Insightful and stimulating. dl
