From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Faithfully retold and brilliantly illustrated, this graphic novel brings Norse myths to life. Beginning with an explanation of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, and traveling all the way to Ragnarök, the Norse version of the apocalypse, Bowen, Dahl, and Simonson explore the complexities of the lives of the old Viking gods, with particular emphasis on Thor and Loki. The ultimate "frenemies," Thor and his adopted brother Loki have a fraught relationship that many readers will recognize from the big screen. From committing fairly innocuous slights (such as convincing Thor to wear a bride's dress as part of a scheme to steal his hammer, Mjölnir, back from giants) to more terrible wrongs (for instance, the death of Odin's favorite son Baldur), Loki is the bad penny of the gods—he somehow always turns up. Readers will thrill at the escalation of his evil deeds and the resulting heroics of Thor, culminating in the final battle, Ragnarök, the Doom of the Gods. Surprisingly complete, the work is enhanced by a glossary that includes phonetic pronunciations of names and additional information about characters, places, and items such as Gungnir, Odin's spear. Clearly demarcated panels and bright, eye-catching illustrations have a classic comic book feel. Though the vocabulary is challenging, the book is accessible, and even younger children will enjoy the action-packed stories. With the popularity of Marvel's "Thor" franchise and Rick Riordan's "Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard" series, this volume is guaranteed to see bountiful circulation. VERDICT A highly recommended addition to graphic novel or folktale collections.—Abby Bussen, Muskego Public Library, WI

This book contains four stories that are also available separately. I love graphic novels as an introduction to stories and fables. I think they make the material accessible for school children and adults alike. The graphics are nice and the stories are well told, introducing the Norse Mythological world and the gods. The stories are fun, and may serve as a springboard to learn more of this tradition.
I got this to read along with my nephew in another state. Very good introduction to Norse Gods for me as I had not read about them before.
A collection of four previously published books which were first issued for the library market. Now bound together in paperback for the general public, this collection of Norse mythology concerns mostly the gods' battles with the giants. Thor stars in each tale and we end with the final battle of Ragnarok. Loki is just as much of a main character as Thor but I wasn't too thrilled with his portrayal. The balance between his tricksterism and evilness wasn't shown very well. These stories are also quite watered down which comes as a surprise to me as Capstone has impressed me in the past with their ability to stay true to original myths while remaining age appropriate. Nevertheless, this is an interesting and action-packed volume which will appeal to kids fond of mythology or the recent movies starring Thor.Thor and Loki by Carl Bowen - Thor, Loki and a servant are sent to the Land of Giant's where Thor wants to impress upon them how much stronger the gods are than the giants. However, they meet up with Utgarda, the king of giants, who happens to be just as much of a trickster as Loki. Here they try and fail at the giants' challenges. Great art by Marvel's Todd Smith (4/5)Thor vs the Giants by Carl Bowen - Several short stories in which Loki and Thor go out and battle giants usually in their own land. They are all fun and a couple were new to me. I'm not too keen on how Loki is being portrayed, half good/half bad, as they are missing his true nature. The rest of the illustrations are done by the well known Eduardo Garcia. His style is more realistic and not to my liking as much as Smith's above. (3/5)The Death of Baldur by Louise Simonson - The tale of Loki's treacherous plan against Baldur and Loki's punishment with the venom dripping onto his head. This also explains the reason for earthquakes. A plethora of characters of Norse mythology show up in this tale, each with a brief cameo. (3/5)Twilight of the Gods - This tells the Battle of Ragnarok, the end of the world. The battle of all battles in which the gods of old are slain. The story is action from start to finish with many characters, each having a brief moment in the sun before they are slain. (3/5)
This colorful graphic novel recounts amazing and enchanting stories about Norse mythology. I was thrilled to review this book because my knowledge on Norse myths is limited. The book had vibrant and action-packed pictures that depicted the story perfectly and was written in an easy-to-understand format. This graphic novel has four colorful tales in one suspenseful book! This book tells about the journeys, adventures, and misadventures of Thor (the god of thunder and lightning), his brother Loki (a small giant who was raised with the gods), Baldur (the god of light), and their father Odin (the all-father/leader of the gods). This book has tales about giants, lies, deceit, love, and betrayal in amazing and vivid pictures. To top it off, this book also has a glossary in the back that explains every character in the book! The glossary was very helpful since a few characters have similar names. I recommend this book for kids ages 10 and older because there are some violent scenes that might make younger audiences uncomfortable. Overall, I loved this book! 5 stars!!Roksanna K, age 13, Broward County Mensa
