Review
“Brilliantly tracing the crisscrossing paths of the two most important thinkers of the sixteenth century, Michael Massing shows that where Martin Luther and Erasmus of Rotterdam parted ways—on the adequacy of human reason, the legibility of Scripture, and the nature of God—is where the grievous fracturing of the modern world begins. The stakes of their increasingly bitter conflict were high and enduring and we today are the heirs of it. The hero of Fatal Discord is the irenic, cosmopolitan Erasmus, who insisted until the end of his days, amid deepening religious violence between Protestants and Catholics across Europe, that men and women were capable of choosing to live generous and peaceful lives and that this is what a loving God wanted for them. A stunning work of historical detection, deeply learned and elegantly written, Fatal Discord adds depth and dimension to the most urgent questions of our times. ” (Professor Robert A. Orsi, author of History and Presence and Between Heaven and Earth: The Religious Worlds People Make and the Scholars Who Study Them.)“Fatal Discord is a striking departure for Mr. Massing, a distinguished journalist whose work has appeared in outlets like the New York Review of Books and the Columbia Journalism Review. . . . Mr. Massing has read widely and intelligently, and he writes superbly. Fatal Discord is surely the only book on either Erasmus or Luther that general readers will ever require. It reads like a lively lecture series in that most beleaguered of university subjects, Western civilization.” (Wall Street Journal)“Massing superbly accomplishes the mammoth task of writing a dual biography of Desiderus Erasmus (1466–1536) and Martin Luther (1483–1546) that places the pair within their historical context...this is a masterly work. Massing manages to juggle the complicated biographies and life work of both Erasmus and Luther while giving the reader a well-written, comprehensive background of pre-Reformation theology.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“In this riveting narrative, Massing recounts how the incendiary friar [Martin Luther] eventually quarrels with and finally repudiates his erstwhile leader, so sundering the church that Erasmus hopes to reform from within, and opening up an epoch-defining gap between Protestant evangelism and cosmopolitan humanism.” (Booklist (starred review))“In this dual biography, Massing deftly treats the lives of both [Erasmus and Luther], setting them in the context of the times… this engaging tale of the contentious relationship between two precursors of the modern world… provides much-needed historical background and reflection on a major period in church and world history.” (Library Journal (starred review))“A riveting dual biography [that] reveals the social, political, and religious tensions roiling 16th-century Europe. Massing focuses on the well-known rivalry between the Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus and the German reformer Martin Luther to create a majestic, deeply informed portrait of their tempestuous times… [Fatal Discord is] an impressive, powerful intellectual history.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Michael Massing, a former executive editor of the Columbia Journalism Review, thinks these theological differences fatefully divided Christianity in ways that reverberate now in American evangelicalism. In his new book Fatal Discord, he brilliantly chronicles how the rift between both men deepened.” (Financial Times)

From the Back Cover
An engrossing dual biography and fascinating intellectual history that examines two key figures of European history—Erasmus of Rotterdam and Martin Luther—whose bitter rivalry gave rise to two enduring, fundamental, and often colliding traditions of philosophical and religious thoughtErasmus was the leading figure of the Northern Renaissance. At a time when Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael were revolutionizing Western art and culture, Erasmus was helping transform Europe’s intellectual and religious life, developing a new design for living for a continent rebelling against the hierarchical constraints of the Roman Church. When he came out with a revised edition of the New Testament in 1516 based on the original Greek, he was hailed as the prophet of a new enlightened age. Today, however, Erasmus is largely forgotten, and the reason can be summed up in two words: Martin Luther. As a young friar in remote Wittenberg, Luther was initially a great admirer of Erasmus and his diagnosis of what ailed the Catholic Church, but while Erasmus sought to reform that institution from within, Luther favored a more radical transformation. Eventually, the differences between them flared into a rancorous competition, with each trying to win over Europe to his vision. In Fatal Discord, Michael Massing seeks to restore Erasmus to his proper place in the Western tradition. The conflict between him and Luther, he argues, represents not just the clash of two headstrong individuals but also of two distinct worldviews—Erasmus the humanist, embracing the brotherhood of man and the diversity of cultures within it, and Luther the evangelical, stressing God’s power and Christ’s divinity and insisting that all recognize those beliefs as absolute and binding. Massing argues that their conflict forms a fault line inWestern thinking—the moment when two central schools of thought, Christian humanism and evangelical Christianity, took shape. A seasoned journalist who has reported on war and peace, political and social issues, Massing here travels back to the early sixteenth century to recover a story that helps explain our current fractured world—a moment when the introduction of new ways of reading the Bible set loose social and cultural forces that helped shatter the millennial unity of Christendom and whose echoes still resound. Massing concludes that Europe has gravitated toward a form of Erasmian humanism, while America has been shaped by Luther-inspired individualism.

The history of Christianity is filled with conflicting pairs: Paul and James, Athanasius and Arius, Augustine and Pelagius, Calvin and Arminius. By any standard, however, Luther and Erasmus were among the most fateful for the future of the West in which we are still deeply imbedded. Although this book is their dual biography, it is also much more than that. Whenever another important figure from the past is introduced (which is often, and include those mentioned above), that biographical information is also skillfully worked into the narrative by Massing. In this way the history of the Reformation becomes a window through which much of the formation of Europe can be viewed. In spite of (or, perhaps, even because of) its great length, the story draws one forward, regardless of the reader’s own religious inclinations. For anyone with even a casual interest in the history of Europe and its foundations, this book is a real treat, and reading it surely leaves the impression of having encountered an important episode of human history. Nevertheless, it might also be noted that the “Christianity Today Institute†(a major, self-identified “evangelical†Christian organization) has estimated that of the 100-plus billion humans who have lived on this earth, over three-quarters of them have died without ever encountering Christianity, regardless of how it has been interpreted.
This is an exceptional book. I was one who had only vague recollections of Erasmus, Luther, popes and the Reformation from a dry, long-ago course in Western Civ, with no particular interest in refreshing my memory. Then I read a couple of published reviews, both of which were very complimentary, and got the bug. Massing is a knowledgeable, talented writer whose lively prose caught and held my interest from beginning to end, and this is a long book. I learned an awful lot about the lives and times of these two important men, as well as other actors of the time. And I seriously enjoyed the experience.
Fascinating. clear, compelling narrative of a complex moment in history unraveling the serious theological questions which lie at the heart of the matter. These were not remote speculative questions which the Scholastics were inquired to raise (such as could God create a stone too heavy to lift or how many angels fit on the head of a pin. Rather, These are the fundamental questions that all Christians are raising today regarding the interpretation of Scripture: what is a reliable translation?, are some translations more accurate than others? Is the Saint James Version version superior to the Jerusalem Bible/ New American Catholic Bible? How should liturgical scholars and biblical scholars translate into contemporary languages? I love this audible edition and I am a Catholic priest theologian with a doctorate in Theology. This was my first exposure to "Audible"! What a pleasure especially towards bedtime when I find reading print both challenging and tiring!
Let’s begin with the obvious. This is a very long book. You either have to be convinced that Erasmus and Luther are worth your hours of reading page after page or you’re convinced, as the author was, that he needed to know about these two figures for how they configured history, particularly the West. I purchased the book for the former reason and I am very glad I did. The initial, accompanying review for the book on Amazon is sufficient (“a deeply textured dual biography that examines two of the greatest minds of European historyâ€)—there really is nothing I could or would add to that brief review. I simply would say this: Michael Massing writes very well and in such a way as to make you keep turning those 900 pages. I’ve read lots of histories and he, while not a professional historian, has told the stories of these two men in a vivid and lucid way that keeps the reader engaged. He “gets†the story part of history.
This monumental dual biography of two of the greatest figures of the 16th century is deeply learned but yet very readable. It is among the best biographies intended for a general readership I can recall. As someone whose knowledge of the Reformation is mostly recalled from high school AP history, this book was revelatory. Beyond fascinating biographical and historical detail, though, is the book's extremely lucid explanation of the doctrinal and theological innovations and controversies and their causative roles in events ranging from the 30 years war, the peasants war, and especially 21st century religious practices in Europe and North America. Highly, highly recommended.
