The Gullah Mailman

From the Inside Flap

In 1924, Sam McGowan tossed aside the social life he was leading in Charlston,South Carolina, and took the post as the only rural mail carrier at Frogmore on St.Helena Island. Charlston's social activities, mandated by his birthright, proved to be a bit dull for an adventurous man like Sam. Instead, he took his new French bride and moved to a locale inhabited by five thousand Gullah-speaking African Americans who were only one or two generations away from slavery. The majority of these island natives had never left the confines of St.Helena. For the next thirty-one years, he was entrusted with their secrets, joys and sorrows. To Sam, Charleston was a distant memory. The Gullah Mailman is a charming biography of a very humorous man who loved his family, his work, and the island off the coast of South Carolina he called home.

I read my good friend Pierre's second book, "Tales Of The Barrier Islands", first and enjoyed it. Then I read, "The Gullah Mailman" and found out just how talented an author he really is. This book is for anyone who enjoys accounts of what rural life on a Lowcountry, South Carolina Island was like in the early part of the 20th century. Pierre grew up as a member of one of a very few white families on this large island populated by the descendants of African slaves. He learned how to accept the values and traditions of people who were quite different from him and he communicates this very well in this book. I highly recommend this excellent account.

If you love the SC lowcountry, you will love this book. As someone who has lived in the SC lowcountry for 30 years, the Gullah language as Mr. McGowan writes it is SPOT ON. Mr. McGowan shares precious stories of his family's life on St. Helena Island. It brought back childhood memories of the south, simpler times when blacks and whites were neighbors, looked out for each other and had a sense of community. Sadly now, those days are gone.

Pierre's first book which should be read before his second one, "Tales of the Barrier Islands". It is about his father and growing up on St. Helena Island near Beaufort. It takes place during a time when living was very simple.

This is a wonderful book about the life on St Helene's Island, SC.Thru the eyes of the mailman!Gives a real feeling of how it was back then.Enjoy!

Actually, this is Kathryn. My husband bought this book for me and I really liked it alot. We have lived here five years now and I have worked hard to gather as many local items as possible. I'm so glad the winds brought us to this special place. We were not aware of the Sea Island area nor Gullah people. We are totally happy every day to be here and I'll apologize (not really) for incroaching on your spiritual place on this earth. Everyday we thank God he allowed us to enjoy this special place. Kathryn

The book was in perfect shape!

I love this area of South Carolina. Have spent many wonderful weeks there in the last 30 years. So beautiful, so many things to do and see. Hope to spend some time there in 2015' Great book.

Having grown up in the Bahamas, and then later visiting the Sea Islands off the coasts of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, I marvelled at the similarity of the spoken dialect. The intact African culture on Daufuskie and St. Helena was amazing to witness, given its proximity to the U.S. mainland via Beaufort, S.C. I have since made many friends in the area, and have watched as the local Gullah coalition has worked hard to maintain the purity and non-commercialism of their legacy.Having said that, though, I don't honestly think that we'll have to worry about 'Gullah Mailman' being worked into the annals of classic Gullah literature. The book is so amateurishly bad that it begs gut-wrenching laughter. Non-linguist white people should not be encouraged to bastardize dialects under the guise of being quaint. [Disclaimer: I am a white person.] I could not stop laughing at his abysmal breakdown of the dialect, and had a hard time believing that the locals to whom he directed this farcical take on their language could keep a straight face either. All in all, I'd stick with 'Legacy of Ibo Landing.'
