Farewell: The Greatest Spy Story of the 20th Century is a solid biography of a former KGB agent who, when he's pulled from the field and given a dead end agency job, decides to betray his country and provide secrets to the "our" side. The problem I had with the book is that we get more information about the man and less about the spying which, honestly, is what attracted me to the book. I also had a difficult time getting into the book because of the writing style. Perhaps it has to do with the translation or the original source book itself. Since I haven't and can't read the book I. It's original language there's no way for me to determine what, exactly, put me off the book initially.Either way those with a more intimate knowledge of cold war politics and the various operations going on both sides will probably find this engrossing.

"Farewell: The Greatest Spy Story of the Twentieth Century" is an altogether fascinating look at what is perhaps the most important and devastating espionage case of the Cold War era. Written by Russian journalist and espionage expert Sergei Kostin and French screenwriter Eric Raynaud, "Farewell" tells the story of Vladimir Ippolitovich Vetrov, a mid-level KGB officer who was also a spy for the French intelligence service known as the DST.During the years 1981-82, Vetrov, code-named "Farewell" by his French handlers, gave the DST thousands of pages of highly classified documents containing many of the Soviet Union's most closely guarded secrets. The government of France shared this information with its allies, most notably U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Vetrov's information proved invaluable to the West; it included the names of double agents working on behalf of the Soviets, and provided details on the myriad of technological and military secrets that those agents were able to steal from Western sources. Many analysts believe that the information provided by Vetrov enabled Western leaders to make key policy-making decisions that ultimately led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.I really enjoyed the book "Farewell." Authors Kostin and Raynaud certainly packed a tremendous amount of information into the book's 390-plus pages. They tell Vetrov's story in a pretty straightforward manner - how he went from being a young man of great promise, and how he became, in his later years, a disillusioned alcoholic, a philanderer, a murderer, and a traitor to his country. Kostin and Raynaud do an excellent job of both conveying what Vetrov did, and providing a thoughtful, reasoned analysis of why he did it."Farewell" was originally written in French, and was expertly translated into English by Catherine Cauvin-Higgins. Kostin and Raynaud's clear, concise, and always elegant prose loses none of its power and authoritativeness in the translation. It remains easy to read and understand, and very enjoyable. Highly recommended.

It is good to have a perspective on Cold War Era Espionage from other than the Amerie an or British points of view. Had Farewell been promoted, or his ideas on KGB reform been acted upon, he might never have turned to the West. Sadly for the USSR, and to the good fortune of France, the USA, and NATO, Farewell was relegated to the sidelines where he watched the scions of the "nomenclatura" receive promotions and plum assignments due only to family connections. While Farewell was exacting revenge in the KGB, he was still committing treason. The West is fortunate that a few, dedicated French security officials were willing to risk their careers by accepting Farewell's unorthodox approaches. As the authors point out, it was Farewells unusual methods, and the willingness of the French DST (which had no experience handling foreign agents abroad) to accept practices that would have been unacceptable to more traditional intelligence agencies which confounded the KGB's internal counterintelligence officers during the Farewell operation.Overall, an enlightening and lively history which should both inform and forewarn the West.

Astonishingly, in 425 pages the authors manage to write about the most important part of the Farewell story in only one very small chapter, Chapter 28, from pages 278 to 287.The other 414 pages are tedious detail, surmise, and speculation about Vetrov, his family relations, his co-worker relations, and his psychological state. Sprinkled very occasionally you find an interesting bit about the inner workings of the KGB, but it's not worth wading through the rest to find these.

I think you have to distinguish between the Russian people and the Russian government. The writer makes the point that individual Russians are intensely patriotic with a great love of their homeland. The Russian peasantry existed in a feudal society until almost the turn of the 20th Century. The spy here was a KGB officer who had fortunate assignments in France and in Canada. He entered the KGB in the early 1960s---at a time when merit of a sort was the key to entry. By the 1970s the children off the nomenklatura were getting into the KGB and rising. His career path was frustrated and he grew disillusioned with his bosses and the ruling party. He wound up in an interesting (but career dead end) position, cataloging reports and results of Soviet technical espionage. He turned those results over to the West--and of course met the fate of most traitors to the Soviet Uniion--the so called 9 gram solution. That is--a bullet to the back of the head in the basement of the Lubyanka.
